Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
