Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
